We just purchased a Parisian apartment with the help of Susan Lu at Parlez-moi de Paris and feel lucky that we chose to work with her. The short version is that she was laser focused on matching us with the right place, worked tirelessly pursuing every opportunity, showed the experience and connections necessary for success, and was there to resolve issues for us. If you're serious about buying real-estate in Paris don't be penny wise, pound foolish and give Susan a call. In more detail, Susan is no nonsense and doesn't waste time on properties that don't meet the criteria. She is in the "off-market" circuit and got us into busy showing schedules early. Clearly real-estate agents knew we were to be taken seriously. Susan was also good at relating the Parisian market. She understands the expectations of American buyers in particular, and knows the Parisian peculiarities. We found this invaluable even though we're fluent in French and have lived in other European cities. When we found "our place" Susan was instrumental in closing the deal. She helped arriving at a reasonable price and could convey to the seller that not only could we make the deal happen but also that they were now under pressure not to loose us as a buyer. She then connected us with a Notaire, contractors to get bids for renovations, and eventually an architect when unforeseen circumstances on our end made that a necessity. Everyone was clearly vetted and a real pleasure to do business with. Also, it was clear that Susan could connect us with professionals at various budget requirements. After everything was signed we had a bit of a situation and Susan was there to lean on the 3rd party to get their act together. In hindsight working with Susan was effective, a great experience and also a real pleasure.
I hired Susan Lu as my buyer’s agent and did end up fulfilling a decades long dream of mine to buy in Paris. Particularly if your French is not very good Susan will prove invaluable to you since she’s French American. She was always responsive and steered me toward an excellent notaire. Our transaction was rocky but it wasn’t her fault (difficult on and off again seller) and she made sure the deal closed. I would indeed advise having someone along with you to do a “home inspection” before you commit. It’s not something French buyers “do” but you really should try to examine the place thoroughly with a contractor anyway. There were several hidden defects (evidence of leaks behind wallpaper we stripped after the sale ) never disclosed to us. Disclosure in Paris seems to be the absolute minimum or non existent. Anyway without Susan I don’t think I would have closed. Thank you, Susan!
