How to choose the right light bulbs for your apartment?
My son recently renovated his apartment, and I took on the task of buying his light bulbs. It seemed simple enough. However, while researching lighting quality, I discovered a criterion I had never heard of before: the Color Rendering Index, or CRI.

What surprised me was how important this index is and how little attention is paid to it when buying a light bulb. People talk about energy consumption, wattage, and warm or cool light, but much less often about the quality of color rendering.
Yet, light plays an essential role in how we perceive an interior. It reveals textures, colors, and spatial dimensions. It also plays a huge role in the comfort and enjoyment we experience at home, especially in the evening.
CRI: A Small Number That Makes a Big Difference
The Color Rendering Index (CRI) measures a light source’s ability to accurately reproduce the colors of the objects it illuminates, compared to a reference source.
It is expressed on a scale up to 100.
Most common LED bulbs have a CRI of around 80. This is acceptable for many uses, but there are bulbs that offer significantly better color rendering.
With a CRI of 90 or higher, colors are generally more accurate, materials are rendered more faithfully, and shades are easier to distinguish. There are also bulbs with a CRI of 95 or higher.
This is a particularly important consideration in an interior where care has been taken in selecting paints, fabrics, furniture, and materials.
Did older light bulbs provide better lighting?
It’s quite surprising: older incandescent bulbs and halogen bulbs had a color rendering index close to 100. With the advent of LEDs, we’ve made huge gains in energy efficiency and lifespan, but not necessarily in color accuracy.
This doesn’t mean that older light bulbs always provided better lighting. But with LEDs, choosing the right CRI has become particularly important. A high-quality LED bulb can now offer excellent color rendering—as long as you know what to look for.
Three criteria to consider before buying light bulbs
However, the CRI isn’t the only factor that determines the quality of lighting. Three specifications deserve your attention:
The placement of the light fixtures, their beam angle, and the ability to adjust their brightness also play an important role.
To find light bulbs with a good CRI, specialized websites can be helpful. On Lampes Direct, for example, the technical specifications of the light bulbs allow you to compare models and check their color rendering index.
A Small Investment, a Big Difference
In my son’s apartment, much of the lighting comes from small LED spotlights recessed into the drop ceilings. I chose bulbs with a CRI above 90, and the result is magnificent. The light is bright without being harsh. It creates a particularly pleasant atmosphere.
Of course, this result isn’t due solely to the CRI. The placement of the spotlights and the color temperature also play a major role.
But this experience has convinced me of one thing: before buying a light bulb, take a few minutes to check its specifications.
You can spend hundreds, even thousands of euros on a beautiful lamp or wall sconce. But for less than 10 euros, choosing the right light bulb can significantly improve the quality of the light and transform the ambiance of a room.
We pay a lot of attention to wall colors, materials, and furniture. But we sometimes forget that it’s the light that allows us to appreciate them.
